Car Boot Collective: Artist in the Community Scheme context – placement – audience – participation The use of the car-boot format as an interface, explores ways for creating meaningful dialogue through non fiscal transactions which re-value objects and relations. It places the audience at the heart of the work transforming them into participants, co-researchers and producers who bring to bear on the work the spectrum of individual and collective experiences of memory, history and meaning. Car boot sales are traditionally marginal sites of social interaction and the diverse groups and individuals who compose the community are not in strong positions to exercise political agency within mainstream society. The car boot sale is a vital cultural event in terms of social relations, alternative economies of exchange, value judgements and the conservation, preservation and circulation of objects and their affects. Inter-relations between subjects and objects provide opportunities for signification (meaning) which connect worlds through participation and collaboration to produce collective manifestations of individual and group identities.

After seeing all the haul videos lately, I figured I had to do one myself. Most of my art supplies come from car boot sales – a flea market or garage sale idea but in a field somewhere, where people sell items they have stuffed in the back of their cars. Why pay full price when you can pick up your supplies -sometimes name brand stuff- for next to nothing?
