The temporary change is because the main car park area will be occupied by vehicles from a television production company, which is filming some scenes for the BBC’s new series of ‘Inspector George Gently’ in the town.

The car boot sale is on from 8.30am to 1pm. Admission for sellers (from 7.30am) costs £8 for a car or £12 for a van. No booking is needed.
Entry for buyers is normally 50p per person but for this month only it’s free in a special post-Easter offer.

On the Sunday, another good cause will be providing some retail opportunities as the Friends of Spennithorne School are holding their annual fundraising Car Boot Sale on the field next door to Tennants Auctioneers (where the circus was last year!).

There is sure to be a lot of people in the area, as the Food and Drink Festival takes place just across the road on the same day, so there’s plenty of incentive for you to get your unwanted things into your car boot!

It costs £6 for a car and £10 for a van. Open 8am to 12noon.

Families are being encouraged to come along to a free fun day at East Carlton Park on Sunday, which will feature a host of games and competitions.

It runs from midday to 4pm and will include an Easter bonnet parade, car boot sale, stalls and games, including egg and spoon races, egg rolling competitions and a paint the best egg competition.

All the money raised on the day will go towards putting on this year’s Corby Carnival.

There will also be a bouncy castle, mini fun fair rides and music from Corby Radio.

Countryside warden Matt Kinnaird said: “Last year it was really well attended because we had a really nice day. It is quite weather-dependent but from what I have seen it is going to be quite nice on Sunday.

“We’ve got the Easter bonnet event which will be judged, an egg and spoon race, various craft stalls and Corby Radio. The money will help Corby Carnival with their event later in the year.”

Terri Meechan, from the Corby Carnival Association, said: “Last year it raised about £400 for us. It is hugely important.

“I love it. It’s great to see all the kids’ faces.”

Corby Council’s lead member for community, Cllr John McGhee, said: “I look forward to seeing many families who are looking forward to doing something more active this Easter holiday and not letting the weather spoil their fun.”

Asda supermarket, off Winterstoke Road, has decided to scrap its annual Easter Sunday sale and has not applied to North Somerset Council for a licence.

A spokesman for the store said: “There are too many difficulties. We have no control over what is sold on the property and where those items have come from.”

He said it was not the sort of event Asda is normally involved with and said if anything untoward happened during the car boot sale, the company would be liable.

Barbara Lewis, who has been to many of its sales over the years, said she was disappointed to hear it would no longer go ahead.

She said: “When we are in a recession, car boot sales are a good way of getting a few bargains.”

The Trench Lane Boot Sale, held on Sundays on a farmland site opposite the entrance to Woodlands Golf Club [map], will open for the first time this year on Sunday 6th May 2012.

New this year: Entry charge for buyers

The organiser of sale has told The Journal that an entrance charge will be levied for all buyers this year, whether they arrive in a vehicle or on foot. Cars will be charged at £1 and pedestrians 50p each.

The move is understood to be a way of circumventing the need for a local authority street trading licence, following confusion in early 2011 when it appeared the organiser might be denied a licence renewal for that year because of complaints of “heavy handed marshalling” said to have occurred at sales in 2010.

In the event, an administrative blunder by South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) meant that the sale’s licence had already been renewed before its Licensing Committee met to consider the complaints.

According to information on SGC’s website, a licence is required by anyone “selling articles … in any road, footway, beach or other area to which the public have access without payment”. A source at the Council confirmed that no licence is necessary in situations where an admission charge is made but added that planning permission might need to be sought in some cases.

As in previous years, the site will open to sellers and buyers at 7am. Trading goes on until around 3pm, although the crowd typically thins after midday. Sellers are charged £7 for a car or £10 for a van. Free parking is provided in adjacent fields.

It became a bit of standing joke in our household last summer that anything that wasn’t nailed or glued down, when I was pacing the house with stackable plastic box in hand, could be removed and sold at the first available opportunity.

According to Wikipedia car boot/trunk sales or boot/trunk fairs are a mainly British form of market in which private individuals come together to sell household and garden goods.

The goods on sale are often used but no longer wanted personal possessions that previously might have been thrown away. Car boot sales generally take place within the summer months are very popular in parts of Australia, and have a growing presence in Europe.

Myself and friend Karen spent several happy and early Sunday mornings in the back of her husband’s van loading and unloading the unwanted contents of our home and displaying them on pasting boards in a large field at a popular Huddersfield car book venue.

Early starts, thankfully do not worry me. Getting up at 4am to be on the road by 5am (a girl still needs a bit of lipstick for the customers) and join the queue became a regular routine. But even at that time in the morning you still need your wits about you with customers “helping” to unload and chose items before you’ve even unpacked.

Bargaining is another key skill you need as a buyer or a seller. Reasonable offers are usually accepted by car booters. They don’t really want to take home anything they have brought. But even I must admit to gritting my teeth last year when a particularly tight-fisted customer offered me 5p for something I had offered for 10p. You can buy and sell practically anything at car boot sales, even a broken toilet seat. Clothes, curtains, bedding, it all goes.

And in my mind if you sell something for a pound which is being unused in your own home. Your quids in. I had a target last year for a new household item that was needed and achieved my goal in three weeks. Fabulous. You can also enjoy some good hearted banter with your customers and fellow booters.
One gentleman visited our stall several times to try on a suit, which we knew would never fit, but he seemed to enjoy the friendly chat anyway.

We also had regulars and bargain hunters who knew we some good stuff on our stalls.
If asked for advice for a successful day I would say a well filled flask, ample lunchbox, brimming float (change) and plenty of plastic bags for packing and packaging. I should add that as a car booter I am not denying business from the charity shops, which I also love. Last year on the last event of the “season” the remaining contents of the van were taken to a charity shop of our choice and were available for sale the following day.

To coin a phrase, make sure you “keep your eyes peeled,” when you car boot or visit charity shops or table top sales. As well as bargains to be had there may also be valuables like the unwanted brooch which was almost sold off for £10 but raised £36,000 at auction after being snapped up by a private collector.

One man or woman’s trash is always another’s treasure. Happy searching. I’ll see you on Sunday!

Commercially-produced power car models include those developed in the 1930s that could be found until the 1960s. Most of these cars known as tether cars used small internal combustion engines. There are models that are wound by a key or a friction mechanism. These were common until electrically slot cars that run on tracks succeeded them in the 1960s. In fact, the original Scalextric line which was sold in 1957 for the first time was essentially a motorized version of earlier clockwork Scalex racers. Radio-controlled cars can be bought assembled or can be built from kits.

Some collecting tips

To a new collector the number of models available may seem daunting. Some degree of specialization will make choice more manageable. How about a certain style or model, by manufacturer, a certain year, a certain scale, type of material used or a themed collection? NASCAR models have a large number of fans. If you single out a manufacturer, brand new models can be purchased on release and you can search for bargains and rare examples from car boot sales, flea markets, yard sales, forums and that great resource internet auction site like ebay. Before you start you may want to check out helpful sources online such as instructional videos, books and links about the hobby of collecting model cars.

When you decide to start collecting you will find you can purchase cars on many venues: the internet, trade magazines and trade shows, in toy stores and hobby shops, or other ways like estate and garage sales, flea markets and the like. When you purchase that is not new, be sure to check the condition of the model and whether it has original parts before you commit yourself.

Joining a user forum will get you acclimated and you will become more informed. Here you might need to explore the options as you might like some forums and not others. A good forum for you will be a very positive experience. Collectors are a friendly community where members assist others to locate a desired model. Get familiar with the abbreviations and terminology collectors use in discussing cars in these user forums. You will become familiar with terms like chase cars which signifies a rare car collectors covet. Almost every Diecast company has its own chase car. It may be a particular model and make, color, or a series.

You should get familiar with how much cars cost. Cost of chase cars and vintage cars is useful knowledge to acquire. Vintage cars in mint condition, can be worth a packet. Consider anywhere between USD30-15,000. They can even sell for higher as the USD 85,000 purchase price of a very rare old Hot Wheels Red Line some years ago illustrates. I bet the kid who bought that car long ago never dreamed it could sell for this price. Attending Diecast shows are also very helpful. They can take place locally as well, so travel time can be saved. For example Dallas has one every month. When attending these shows consider being there from the start to the end. Morning attendance will aid your effort to obtain any hot cars you are interested in that may disappear later in the day. At closing time, dealers wishing to unload their stock will lower their prices or be in the mood to reduce the price for a determined bargain hunter.
